This privacy policy describes how the Orbit Media Player Android application (“the app”) collects, uses, and discloses information.
Summary in plain language
The app does not collect, transmit, store on a server, or share any personal data. There is no analytics SDK. There is no advertising SDK. There is no crash-reporting service phoning home. The app reads the media files on your device so you can play them; everything else stays on your device.
What we collect
On-device only — never transmitted off your device
- The list of media files in folders you have granted permission to read.
- Your favorites, playback history, resume positions, bookmarks, playlists, and queue order — in a private SQLite database that only the app can read.
- Your settings (theme, equalizer, sleep timer, etc.) — in Android's DataStore preferences.
Not collected at all
- No name, email, phone number, advertising ID, location, contacts, calendar, photos (other than media files you explicitly grant access to), or any other identifier.
- No user accounts. There is nothing to sign in to.
- No server. There is no backend to send data to.
Network use
The app makes outbound network requests only when you explicitly use the Downloader feature to fetch a media file from a URL you have pasted. In that case the URL is sent to the host of that URL via standard HTTPS to download the file, which is stored on your device in your Movies/ or Music/ folder. The app does not send any analytics about which URLs you download, when, or how often.
The app does not make any other network requests. It does not check for updates from us (Google Play handles that), does not send crash reports, does not check licensing, does not phone home, does not load remote configuration.
Permissions and why we need them
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
READ_MEDIA_VIDEO / READ_MEDIA_AUDIO (Android 13+) | To list and play the videos and music on your device. |
READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED (Android 14+) | So “Select photos and videos” partial access still works. |
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android 12 and below) | Same purpose, on older Android versions. |
INTERNET + ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | Required only for the Downloader feature. Not used elsewhere. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK | To keep music playing when the app is in the background, with controls in the system notification. |
FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC | For the Downloader to continue downloading when the app is backgrounded. |
POST_NOTIFICATIONS | To show playback controls and download progress in the notification shade. |
WAKE_LOCK | To prevent the device from sleeping during playback or active downloads. |
BLUETOOTH_CONNECT | To respond to hardware play/pause buttons on Bluetooth devices. The app does not scan for or track any Bluetooth devices. |
The app does not request location, microphone, camera, contacts, calendar, SMS, phone, or biometric permissions.
Data sharing
We do not share any data because we do not collect any data. There is no advertising network, no analytics provider, no crash reporter, no marketing tool integrated with this app.
Data storage and deletion
- Delete settings & history: Settings → Clear data, or uninstall the app.
- Delete downloaded files: they live in your device's
Music/andMovies/folders and can be deleted in any file manager.
Uninstalling the app deletes all app-private data immediately. Files you've downloaded survive uninstall — they're yours.
Children's privacy
The app does not collect any data from anyone, including children. Because no data leaves your device, COPPA and similar regulations do not apply to data we hold (we do not hold any).
Third-party libraries
The app uses Media3/ExoPlayer (Google), OkHttp (Square), Coil, Room/DataStore/WorkManager (AndroidX), and Hilt/Dagger (Google). None of these libraries is configured to transmit data off your device.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy if features change. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated. Material changes will be called out in the app's release notes on Google Play.
